Every once in a while, a restaurant comes along with food so good it makes me feel like standing up in its powder-blue, super-pretty, retro booth to cheer. Welcome Diner Tucson had this effect on me. I was so excited, I went back the next day.
Everyone is talking about this great new diner so I knew that I needed to check it out but I wasn’t prepared to have my socks knocked off so completely. I just thought it was the latest trendy place that uses words like “local” and “fresh” to entice us. The thing is: Welcome Diner stands by their words.
Locally Sourced, Made From Scratch
To begin with, when Welcome says “local,” they mean Local! Not just a handful of their produce items, either; 40% of their ingredients are sourced within a hundred miles. With food that fresh, Welcome Diner isn’t only supporting local commerce, farming and industry; you can taste the difference. Even the plates are made in Tucson.
Another term that is loosely used in advertising nowadays is “scratch kitchen.” Once again, Welcome Diner means what they say. Every. Single. Menu item. They are all made from scratch. In their kitchen. All the sauces. All the gravy. The biscuits. Even the jam. Even the mustard is house-made. My own kitchen isn’t that pure.
They offer menu items like biscuits and gravy, fried chicken sandwiches with local honey or gravy, burgers and fries. Local coffee, local booze, Mexican Coke. A pie-baker who is clearly a freaking genius. We ordered a little of everything and the entire family all agreed: this is our new favorite restaurant.
And, the best news of all is that it is all made with 100% real food.
Prices reflect the quality of the food so if you’re looking for cheap it’s not your place. However, if you’re looking for a good meal with the comfort of a cozy local diner, you won’t be disappointed.
