Now, I realize that Bruegger’s Bagels isn’t locally owned, they are a huge chain and also may seem kind of ordinary, but I’m going to take a quick minute to talk about the awesomeness of this bagel shop.
I talk to a lot of restaurant owners and employees and I get a lot of different responses when I begin to ask questions about their ingredients. Occasionally there will be someone who understands what I’m asking and they are able to tell me without even having to check that they know what is in the food they serve and that is real. Usually people seem sort of confused and it seems clear that my questions aren’t what they are used to hearing. Sometimes these people will then go and check on their ingredients and sometimes they won’t. Sometimes they would rather lose me as a customer than disclose their ingredients. Sometimes, more often than I’d expect, people are a little defensive. Which surprises me. Because I don’t think it’s inappropriate for me to want to know what I’m eating.
I find it perplexing that most people don’t want to know what they are eating.
I also find it perplexing that restaurant owners don’t actually know what they are serving. In all the work that goes into running a restaurant, thinking about what they are feeding people doesn’t make their list of priorities. Seriously?
Which brings me to why I think Bruegger’s Bagels is extraordinary. A couple years ago when I was investigating ingredients so that we could eat at bagel shops and go beyond a bagel with cream cheese, I was directed to the website for Bruegger’s. It turns out that they list all the ingredients for every single item on their menu.
I don’t know if you, Reader, realize how special this is. This morning when I was at the downtown Bruegger’s having a quick breakfast before doing errands, I was thinking about it and I felt so respected by this company. They think that I have a right to know what I’m eating and these days, that’s rare.
I probably don’t have to tell you that their bagels are yummy because most people just know that. Not every menu item is all natural but most are. Order wisely and enjoy a bagel from this conscientious company.
